Many people don’t know quite the amazing history the Stratford Inn has.   The Hotel was built as an “L” shaped addition around a mansion that still exists in the middle of the hotel to this day!  In 1882 Reuban Ellwood purchased the property (which contained a stagecoach stop at the time) and built the mansion that became the home to him and his wife.  Mr. Ellwood was the first major of Sycamore and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.  It is believe that the first floor (now known as the Fireside Room of the hotel) was used as his congressional house.

Mr. Ellwood died in 1885 at the age of 64.  Mrs. Ellwood remained in the mansion until her death.
